Commentary
Success, wealth, and health can be extremely blinding. They are the lighting in the stage that dazzle you into forgetting you are an actor.
When you get what you think you want, you stop seeking. You begin to think that because your feet are moving, you are advancing; unconscious of the treadmill below. Only when you pause, do notice its presence.
Hope, although romanticized by pop culture and cinema, is just the partner in crime of regret. The latter keeps you in the past and the former in the future; both at the cost of the present moment.
Tao In Practice
Success Management 101
Imagine a pendulum, swinging back and forth between happiness and sadness. Life is the wind around it causing it to oscillate. There will be occasional strong winds in any direction but the Toaist Master has a heavier bob, resistant to any outside forces. Is he going to miss the ups and downs of life? Maybe, but he values the center too much to care. Mind the weight of your pendulum.
Hope Management 101
Hope is the weak man’s, optimism. Hope has a specific result in mind and explicit expectations about the future. Optimism, on the other hand, is perfectly comfortable under uncertainty. The optimist is OK with not knowing how things will end, yet he thrives, replacing any doubt, fear, or disbelief with excitement. He discovers life as he goes along with a smile set in his face, and in his heart.
